September 2024 Literary Road Trip Box: Missouri

September 2024 Literary RoadTrip Box

The September 2024 Literary Road Trip box is themed to the state of Missouri. I've had the pleasure of visiting this state twice, including an over-night stay in Kansas City during our most recent road trip.

While researching Missouri, I learned that the official state dessert is the ice cream cone. Isn't that a fun fact? I also discovered that iced tea was said to be invented at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, although this fact is a bit contentious, as other places lay claim to the invention of iced tea. St. Louis is home to the Gateway Arch, which is the tallest monument in the states. I visited the arch in 2020 and it was truly spectacular. I learned that Kansas City has more fountains than any other city besides Rome. Kansas City is also famous for being the home to one of the four regional styles of bbq in the US.

The Weight of Blood by Laura McHugh is the September featured book. This atmospheric mystery is set in the Ozark Mountains and follows a young woman named Lucy, who is trying to unravel the truth of two major losses in her life; the disappearance of her mother and the brutal murder of a close friend. McHugh has gone on to have a successful career and this was her debut novel.

September's indie bookstore partner is Skylark Bookshop. Located in Columbia, Skylark Bookshop has been around since 2018. I had the joy of visiting Skylark Bookshop this summer, including meeting one of the cofounders, Carrie Koepke. I will be sharing more about Skylark Bookshop in an upcoming blog post. The September box includes Skylark's branded pens, bookmarks, and temporary tattoo.

Do you get emotionally attached to fictional characters? Store your new pen in a canvas book-themed bag by Coastal Creators of Connecticut. Coastal Creators of Connecticut is a husband/wife run small business located in East Lyme, CT.

As the weather shifts to fall, cozy up with a cup of coffee from Ozark Mountain Coffee Co. The September box includes an 8oz bag of their Caramel Butter Pecan coffee. This company opened in 1994 and takes its inspiration from the beauty of the Ozarks. Connecting books and coffee, we have a themed sticker from Savannah and James Co. This small business is run by a brother and sister team in Georgia and it opened in 2020.

The limited edition Missouri box is now available for a single-sale purchase. Shipping within the United States is included in the purchase price. Are you an adventurous reader who values supporting indie bookstores and small businesses? Please join the Literary Road Trip subscription to reserve future boxes and lock-in the lowest price.
